My first photo jaunt through Helsinki was was both COLD and eye opening. The buildings look more Russian than old European and the people do not smile.
I was told Finnish people are distant and cold and I can confirm that at first brush this is totally true. I grew up in rural Utah and part of my culture was to wave at anyone driving or passing by, If one was close enough to see the others eyes it was expected we say say hi, hey, yo, ‘morning, or some other greeting. In Finland do not do this! I smiled and nodded my head at strangers as I walked by and they scowled at me. Knowing that I must be doing something wrong I sought out a receptive Finn and over alcohol learned the rules. So here you go:
1: Do not attempt to talk to strangers unless you need help. If you ask they are very helpful and speak excellent English; however, it isn’t polite and they really don’t want to talk to you.
2: Do not ask a Finn how they are doing. They will answer you and tell you exactly how they are doing and will be annoyed that you asked.
3: Finns love to complain about the weather so don’t get them started. It Is the one time they won’t stop talking.
4: Don’t offer to shake hands. They don’t do that here unless they know you. It’s easy to understand why given that they are usually wearing 2 layers of gloves because of the cold!
So far there hasn’t been any snow and its rather cold but every experience has been amazing. This city is a must see. More to come!
