As a Captain I frequently find myself going to the islands. Typically a trip to the Bahamas involves taking a boat either to or from a Bahamian port for an owner. Since crossing the Florida straights can be daunting owners prefer to have their boats delivered by a professional captain.
I love everything about traveling to the Bahamas from the crystal clear waters to the amazing people and unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. The island waters can be thousands of feet deep or less than 6″ all within 100 yards of shore. Some of the things you need to know about the islands before you go.
1: Slow down. No one is in a hurry and no one cares that you are in a hurry. Life is slower on the islands and you should prepare for this reality. Take it as an opportunity for some you time. Look around, smell the orchids, explore the sights, listen to the sing song of the islander slang.
2: Be polite. Say good morning, “Mornin’ Mornin’ Mornin'” is well received. Don’t be surprised to hear a “bless you” or “bless it” and always offer respect. It will get you where you need to go. If you are rude… life will get very complicated and expensive.
3: Try something new. The food may or may not be familiar but the way they eat it could be a shock, but that is ok! Try the fish stew, cracked conch, fresh mango or papaya. Don’t be afraid of their local beer and remember spicy is SPICY on the islands.
4: Catch a sunrise/sunset. If you have never truly been awestruck then wake up early and go to the beach and experience some of the most amazing sunrises I have ever seen. Clear water, pollution free sky, and endless horizons paint the most beautiful sunrise scenes!
